Abstract

In the context of the history of collecting Samuel Quicchelberg is considered to be the founder of the theory of collecting, his small treatise Inscriptiones vel Tituli Theatri amplissimi marks the beginning of the erudite discussion about this mayor theme in pre modern scholarship. This essay asks for the motivation of Quicchelberg to write his text. On the one hand it shows that it was not his intention to give a kind of general blue print for others to organize their choice collections, but that he wants to use his book to apply for the place of the ‘Kunstkämmerer’ at the Bavarian court in Munich. On the other hand the essay is looking for the reception of Quicchelberg’s treatise and shows the reasons why it doesn’t take place in a very extensive way.
