Abstract

A number of metaphors can be found in the natural sciences. The number of metaphors in common language that refers to scientific terms is not necessarily smaller. In this paper, metaphors are to be discussed that were introduced in the field of electricity during the 18th century and which result from this area respectively. In doing so, it will be demonstrated that metaphors were particularly introduced during the development of the conceptual understanding in a field. It will also be shown that several metaphors originate from the same area of knowledge. Likewise, several metaphors that are used in common language are also connected with each other both in the scientific area and in everyday language. Moreover, it will be shown that some metaphors originate from a conceptual domain whilst others are related to practical performances. Nowadays, scientists are often no longer aware of the latter type.
