Abstract

The article examines and analyses the metaphorical conceptualization of refugees in Spanish press articles from February 2016, the month in which the European Union – after months of arduous debate and unilateral political decisions – passed a law to regulate so-called migration flows and to control the external borders of the European Union. The paper investigates linguistic metaphors used to frame refugees in La Razón, a conservative daily newspaper, and in El País, a politically left-leaning daily newspaper. The aim is to reveal commonalities and differences in the linguistic representation of refugees in each periodical which may be attributed to their respective political positions.
