Black, Blanc, Beur: Metaphorische Identität, identische Metaphern?
Formen und Funktionen der Metaphorik in der französischen Tagespresse zum Mondial 1998
Abstract
Metaphors play an essential role in constructing a national identity during international championships. In brief, the linking of the national team and its success with abstract emotions concerning nations, regions and social groups are deeply influenced by and contested via metaphor. The following paper therefore investigates the metaphors used to describe the success of the pluri-ethnic French football-team in the newspapers Humanité and Le Figaro during the winning of world championship in 1998. An emphasis is put on the textual context by which the same linguistic metaphors used by both newspapers make reference to quite different metaphorical concepts and, consequently, different political implications concerning a different conception of national identity.
