Abstract

Heterogeneity and (cultural) diversity are increasingly becoming challenges for the educational systems and teachers as professionals. The article focuses on the perception of culture and culturally interpreted diversity by education students. As part of a larger research project which reconstructs the interpretative schema of educational students regarding cultural heterogeneity the article focuses on the use of metaphorical concepts. The use of metaphors helps students to express the highly complex issue of culture and heterogeneity. In the empirical section various metaphorical concepts are identified and discussed. The metaphorical concepts used by education students differ significantly from dominant metaphors in the public discourse. Nevertheless, most metaphors and their conception highlight culture as a marker signifying the difference between ‘us’ and ‘them’ while hiding dynamic concepts. These results are discussed from a critical angle on culturalization and dominance.
